Interview in English

We discovered the designer Amélie Pichard via her collection of shoes and bags in cork, this material intrigued us and we wanted to know more about the person behind these designs original, feminine and inspired by the vintage. Amélie Pichard became known by winning the prize of the young designer of Bata in 2009 and so by having the possibility of creating a capsule collection for the brand. The spring/ summer 2012 collection allows to associate shoes with the bags from the same material and color, an innovative concept and rather practical for the fanatics of the association of accessories. If we had to choose our favorite pieces we would opt for the black bag A.BAG with the small crocodile in golden metal and of course the shoes in cork, our very favorite.

Tell us how everything began for you?
5 years at Dice Kayek as director of the studio, a training at a Parisian bootmaker to learn the methods of fabrication of the shoe, the Bata contest of the young designers which encouraged me to launch my brand. It's been almost two years.

What did you learn the most from your collaboration with the brand Bata?
The luck to be able to address low budgets. And a real help!

How would you describe the style Amélie Pichard?
Sophisticated, vintage and edgy.

Can you tell us about your envy to work with the cork material?
I like the mix between raw and the sophisticated. The cork is the ideal material to mix with materials more chic.

What are the qualities indispensable to the designer's job according to you?
A universe, the will and to be surrounded well.

Do you have an icon?
According to my collection theme and my envy, I make a mix of several women who often do not exist any more today... Once the models is created I imagine them on Charlotte my muse (who's very alive) and if that sticks, banco!

As a young creator which is the biggest challenge you had to face?
Find a manufacturer! Having tested several factories, a creative friend of shoes (very kind) spun me the good contact, she makes very colored and girly shoes, I am sure you see who I mean!

Can you describe us a typical working day?
I work in my Home-sweat-home / workshop, no day is alike... I am on all the fronts at the same time (collection, production, accounting, etc.). Thus I have three offices in the same room, it is the only solution that I found to manage to cut my brain and my organization... My working companions are my two Persian cats Sailor and Lula;)

What job other one than designer would you have been able to exercise?
I am a styling teacher in a Fashion school in Paris (Mod' art), it is my second job, and I like that. Otherwise bargain hunter and vintage specialist would have pleased well me.

What was your inspiration for your collection Nostalgia?
A mix between the colored and edgy universe from the B52 in the 80's, and the minimalism of the 60's, adapted to my incontrovertible icons inspired by past but ever forgotten heroines of cinema... Such as Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks or Carmen Miranda.

What are your projects for 2012?
An amazing corner in the Bon Marché in Paris since last February 20th. Then, a model of bag the "A.BAG" with a crocodile in golden metal, the real vintage republication which already knows a lot of success. (Soon available on lexception.com).
